What is the Roleplayer’s Lament?

The Roleplayer’s Lament is a blog written by Lanuria and Varendil Dawnblade of Moon Guard-US about some of the poorest examples of roleplay we can find in the World of Warcraft. We collect the worst examples of roleplaying flags – character descriptions within ImmersionRP, FlagRSP, MyRoleplay, and other similar World of Warcraft addons – that we can find, and we post them here. We then vivisect them and display the innards for the amusement of our audience. After this, we have a quick discussion on how to salvage this roleplay into something that’s more fun, fits better into the lore, doesn’t involve godmoding, et cetera.

Our targets are not the new roleplayers, who simply need direction, advice, or information. Our selections are the veterans with hubris, the ignorant that play whatever they want with no regard for fun, good writing, or community. We don’t want to discourage RP, we want to cut out the chaff.

We have dual purposes here – to entertain, and to educate. While priority one in our selection of targets/subjects/what have you is the amount of humor we can mine from them, we also want to make clear what they’re doing wrong, and how they can fix it. We’re not anti-roleplay. We’re anti-lorebreaking, anti-Sue, anti-godmoding, anti-physically impossible things in your erotic roleplay.

We do our best to foster a community of fellow roleplayers, a place people can come for laugh, to ask a question of their peers, to feel that someone else out there is wary of the crap. Our comments are almost never moderated, and we want you to feel free to speak your minds. We also have a forum for discussion of other topics, whether you want feedback on a character idea, have a lore question, or simply need some new image macros.
